In the study of language the verb ‘to inflect’ and related words such as ‘inflection’ have two different uses:

  • They may refer to changes in the way a sentence is spoken, more specifically, to a rise or fall in the pitch of the speaker's voice, such as the rise in pitch at the end of a sentence (e.g., ‘He is going to be late?’) which indicates that, despite having the word-order of a statement, it is intended as a question. For more see Inflection (vocal).
