Amenity
From Hull AWE
In British RP pronunciation, the second syllable of amenity has the long '-i-' of 'machine' and 'seen', not the 'short '-e-' of 'amen' and 'then'. The word is pronounced 'a-MEAN-it-i', IPA: /ə (or æ) 'miː nɪ tɪ/ Some US speakers realize amenity with the short vowel, 'a-MEN-it-i', IPA: /ə (or æ) 'mɛ nɪ tɪ/.
- Etymological note: Amenity comes from the Latin amoenitas, 'pleasantness', a noun from the adjective amoenus, 'agreeable', 'delightful'.
