Appropriate
From Hull AWE
- The adjective appropriate (~ 'suitable', 'proper') is fairly common in formal English.
Do not confuse it
- with the less common verb, 'to appropriate', which means 'to take possession of' - often with the meaning of 'by force', or without the consent of the former owner.
- In the latter case, it is permissible to say, for example, "The banker misappropriated the customer's funds."
The two homographs are differentiated in their pronunciation: the adjective meaning 'suitable' is pronounced a-PRO-pree-ut, IPA: /ə 'prəʊ prɪ ɪ(or ə)t /; the verb has a more open vowel and a slight stress on the final syllable: a-PRO-pree-ate, IPA: /ə ,prəʊ prɪ 'eɪt/.
