Banal

The adjective banal is pronounced with the stress on the second syllable 'be(r) NAHL', IPA: /bə ˈnɑːl/. It means 'very ordinary', 'commonplace', and was originally French. So it is pronounced in the French way - or at least, as near as the usual British academic can pronounce French. The related noun banality has the same stress, on the second syllable, but the vowel 'a' in that syllable is pronounced to rhyme with 'that' (IPA: /bə ˈnæl ɪt ɪ/).
