Colloquial language is informal language that although is not in any way rude or offensive would not be used in formal situations. A colloquialism is an informal expression that would not be used in formal speech or language. Examples of colloquialisms can range from single words such "she was gonna go the the shops" to phrases "he was dead as a doornail".
