  • The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations (often abbreviated as ODQ) is one of the most authoritative reference works, for the general reader, for finding sources of commonly quoted tags, or for checking the source, or precise wording, of familiar quotations. It was first published in 1941, at a time when editors did not seek the limelight; the only attribution given is 'the compilers' who signed the preface 'The Compilers to the Reader'. From the 1990s, the names of the editors have been given.
