The plural of criterion is criteria. Looked at the other way, of course, the singular form of criteria is criterion .

It is an error in academic English to write 'a [or one] criteria is'. It should be either 'The criteria are' or 'One criterion is'.

Criterion comes originally from Greek. See -a in Greek. It is etymologically connected with critic.
