In British English, the convention is to write the abbreviation per cent as two separate words. This reflects its Latin origin, the preposition per and numeral centum ('hundred').
- The American convention is to write it as one seven-letter word, percent. AWE recommends you to avoid this in academic writing.
- The noun percentage is always written as a single word.
In both Britain and America, % is the abbreviation most used in writing.
