In British English, the convention is to write the abbreviation per cent as two separate words. This reflects its Latin origin, the preposition per and numeral centum ('hundred').

The American convention is to write it as one seven-letter word, percent. AWE recommends you to avoid this in academic writing.
The noun percentage is always written as a single word.

In both Britain and America, % is the abbreviation most used in writing.
