Saint Anne is the name traditionally given to the mother of the Virgin Mary by Christians and Muslims. She is not named in the Bible or the Qur'an; the source of the tradition is the apocryphal Gospel of James (also known as the Infancy Gospel of James and the Protoevangelium of James). In this, Mary's father is Joachim - also recognized as a saint in Christianity.

Although there is no proof that she ever existed, the cult of Mary led to much veneration of Saint Anne, to whom many churches are dedicated.
