The use of show as a noun is a common colloquialism in several areas. Avoid it in academic writing. (For a note on the inflections of the irregular verb 'to show', go to show (irregular verb); for a note about an older spelling, go to shew - shewn - shewed.)

  • For show in the most common sense, in the area of the performing arts, say a 'play' or 'musical', etc, as appropriate; or use the all-purpose '[theatrical] performance'.
  • In the area of the visual arts, say 'an exhibition'.
