Untowards is rare in current English. When it is used at all, it is used as an adverb describing conditions such as the weather and means 'unpropitious[ly]', 'unfavourably' or 'with an ill omen'. This is the opposite of towards.
- In older English, it was occasionally used interchangeably with untoward as an adjective. This is no longer done.
