This is one of the 117 mis-spellings listed as 'Common difficulties' in the section on 'Spelling' within 'Writing' in UEfAP.


The word chocolate is spelled thus, with two '-o-'s and three syllables, + a silent '-e'.

Etymological note: chocolate, the popular flavouring for sweets in the modern world, is derived from the pre-Conquest Mexican chocolatl, prepared (both by early Mexicans and modern people worldwide) from the seeds of the cacao (or 'cocoa') tree, Theobroma Cacao.
