Cockburn is a surname, now more common perhaps in Scotland than in England. It is derived from a place-name in the Scots Borders county (formerly Berwicksbire). It is normally ponounced 'CO-burn' (IPA: /'kəʊ bərn/, "apparently to veil the imagined indelicacy of the first syllablr" (A dictionary of English place names).

The name is sometimes confused with Cochrane. Don't mix them up!
