Holy Week, sometimes called Passion Week, is the commemoration in the church year of the central mystery of the Christian faith: the period in which God, in the human form of Jesus (God the Son), was tortured to death, descended into Hell, and then rose again into life. %he days of Holy Week have special names:

  • Palm Sunday, or the Sixth Sunday in Lent, commemorates the day of Jesus' entry into Jerusalem, riding on a donkey, with which he traversed the many boughs of palms and other greenery which had been strewn on the streets before him on his triumphal entry to Jerusalem.
    • In some Christian sects, Holy Week has been termed Passion Week, but the phrase has been used for other liturgical periods as well and should be avoided.
  • Holy Monday
  • Holy Tuesday
  • Holy Wednesday (also called Spy Wednesday, because according to St John's Gospel 12:6, this was the day on the evening of which Judas Iscariot decided to betray Jesus).
  • Maundy Thursday commemmorates the Last Supper, eaten on the eve of the Passover, during which Jesus washed the feet of his Disciples. This is echoed in the rite of the Royal Maundy, in which the British sovereign, as head of the Church of England, washes the feet of as many poor men and as many poor women as the sovereign's age in years and presents each with a purse of (specially struck, legal tender) Maundy coins, silver 1p, 2p. 3p and 4p coins'. Similarcommemmoration, in foot-washing, occurs in various sects and areasof thgeCVhristian church
    • Maundy is derived, through corruption in OE and medieval French, from the Latin translation of Jesus' words at the Last Supper]] "Mandatum novum do vobis" (‘A new commandment I give you’).This was to eat bread and drink wine in memory of Jesus - see also communion.
  • Good Friday. It is a paradox noted by many entering on the satudy of Christianity that the commemmoration of the day on which Jesus was tortured to death (by crucifixon) should be called Cood Friday. The orthodox response is that the Friday of Holy Week is the day of the year most to be celebrated, as it was on that day and by that event that God redeemed mankind from the curse of original sin incurred by Adam and Eve (see Fall of Man).
      • In 1916, the Easter Rising in Dublin marked the beginning of the campaign that led to the Irisn Civil War and the foundation of the Republic of Ireland
      • On April 10, 1998, the Good Friday Agreement was reached in Ireland, bringing to an end 'The Troubles', or sectarian violence that had plagued the UK's constituent Northern Ireland since the 1960s, a stage in the long-run problems in the island of Ireland since uts colonisation by England

  • Holy Saturday (Black Saturday)
  • Easter Day The great celebration of thanks for the Resurrection of Jesus - the central miracle of the Christian faith, in which God the Son (the incarnation of God in human form) returned from the dead after his crucifixion

And Easter Week:

Easter Sunday

Easter Monday
