Bert - Bertie
From Hull AWE
Bert or Bertie is an informal shortening of a forename. The original from which it is shortened varies. Withycombe (1950) says: "The somewhat plebeian Bert is the usual diminutive of Albert... Bertie, on the other hand, is more often from Herbert or Bertram ...,but both may be used for any name ending in -bert, e.g. Cuthbert." Bert(ie) is a short form of the forename see above. There are two main types of such shortenings: they are convenient for writing, e.g. in lists; or they are essentially spoken pet-names, and thus informal. (See Conventional abbreviations for forenames.)
