This category is to contain notes on the most familiar conractions in English. Commonly these begin as ways of speeding up, or easing, speech, but they are also represented in writing, often by the use of [[apostrophe (omission)|apostrophes to indicate letters left out of the 'correct' spelling of words. There is a tendency to avoid such contractions in formal academic writing, but positive prohibition of contractions is a fashion in decline.
