Emigrant - immigrant
From Hull AWE
Don't confuse these two words, which sound very similar in casual speech. Both are derived from the Latin verb migrāre, 'to migrate', or ' to wander from place to place'. This is a seasonal occurence with many animals; in modern humans, it is a more long-lasting, and often permanent, move. The related abstract noun to label the activity of a migrant is migration.
- An emigrant is one who migrates ē or out of [a country, etc]. The related abstract noun is emigration.
- An immigrant is one who migrates in- or into [another country or place]. The related abstract noun is immigration.
