The homophones Lettice and lettuce shouldn't be (and are only rarely) confused.

  • Lettice is a female forename. It is an old adaptation into English of the Latin forename Laetitia, which means 'happiness', and may be spelled 'Latisha' or 'Leticia' or some other variant. It is pronounced with the stress on the second syllable, and a final consonant sound of '-sh-' IPA: /lə(or ɪ) ˈtiː ʃə(or a)/. For more on an abbreviation, see Titty.
  • Lettuce is the common noun naming the common salad vegetable Lactuca sativa.
