Saint Francis

Several saints have been called Francis. Saint Francis by itself usually means Saint Francis of Assisi, the founder of the Grey Friars, or the Fratres Minores (‘Lesser Brothers’), the Franciscan Order. Other Saint Francises include

  • St Francis de Sales (1567-1622), Bishop of Geneva in the early Calvinist times, a respected teacher, preacher and a good man who was respected even by his religious opponents. It was in memory of this saint that the Salesian Order was founded;
  • Saint Francis Xavier (1506-1622), the great Jesuit missionary to the East.
  • Saint Francis Solano (1549–1610), the Apostle of America. He was a member of the Franciscan Order, born in Spain, who went to Peru in 1589. He worked tirelessly among the natives, African slaves, and his compatriots, in Peru. Argentina, Bolivia and Paraguay. He was canonized in 1726.
