Relict is used currently in science, esp. biology and geology, as well as in linguistics, for a surviving remnant of a species, ecosystem or language that was formerly more widespread.
- Thanks for this, whoever you are! It is helpful if you can tell me - perhaps with a little detail of 'where you are coming from' - so that I can judge how much weight to give your information. In this case, OED supports you, so I'm glad you brought the matter to my attention.
