The common fruit the apple has significance in different areas of mythology.
- In Christian tradition, the apple was the Tree of the knowledge of good and evil‎ (although Jewish traditions identify it variously as figs, grapes or wheat).
- A fragment of the fruit is said to have stuck in Adam's throat, and forms the Adam's apple, or the visible signs of the voice-box or larynx in the human neck - the thyroid cartilage.
- In classical Greek mythology, the Apple of Discord was that thrown by Eris, the goddess of discord, into a gathering to cause trouble between the goddesses. This trouble lay at the root of the Trojan War.
