Adjectives with verbs (error)

  • Adjectives are words that say more about nouns (‘naming’ words), like 'good', 'large', 'beautiful', etc.
  • Adverbs are words that say more about verbs (‘doing’ words), like 'well', 'largely', 'beautifully', etc.

Do not use adjectives with verbs. (Using adverbs with nouns is a much rarer error.) Academics sneer at football managers who say “The boy done great” – it should be “He did well”, of course (at least, it is obvious to the kind of teacher who likes to sneer).
