The verb of utterance 'to mention' is very commonly used by students whose first language is not English. It is an item of vocabulary not to be trusted. The idioms of its use are treacherous.

Use 'to say' instead. It is simpler and says what you mean. Sometimes, perhaps, writers become bored with using the word 'say' over and over again. But it is often the best.

You may also want to consult AWE's article on mention about, which concerns a different error of idiom.
