The adjective risible, meaning 'laughable', is pronounced in British formal English (RP) with two short '-i-'s . It rhymes with 'visible'. In American English, it is pronounced with a diphthong for the first '-i-' like that in 'rise' (IPA: /raɪzɪbəl/.

The source of (risible is the Latin verb ridere, which has a long '-i-' in the first syllable, like that in 'machine' (IPA: /iː/).
