The noun imprint means generally 'something printed', 'a mark produced by pressure' or 'an impression'. In its more academic sense, it refers to "The name of the publisher, place of publication, and date, printed in a book, usually at the foot of the title-page (formerly often at the end of the book); also, the name of printer and place of printing, printed at the end of the book, or on the back of the title-page: these are distinguished as the publisher's imprint and printer's imprint" (OED, meaning 3. a).

It is sometimes used in publishing to refer to a particular class of books in a publisher's catalogue: for example, Macmillan publishes books for students under the 'label of Palgrave Macmillan, and OUP's most academic books are 'published at the Clarendon Press. This forms a recognisable 'brand' in the larger output of a given publisher.
